Nature consists of five elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth.

In Ayurveda, these are called Aakash, Vaayu, Agni, Jal, and Prithvi, respectively, and all living beings draw energies from these five elements.

Water is necessary for life on Earth – It makes up approximately 60% of an adult human body. Though refrigerators have taken over the spot that clay pots once had in terms of storing water,
they don’t provide as many nutrients that clay pottery offers.

Here are 5 reasons why you should drink water from a clay pot during summer time.

Clay Is Alkaline In Nature

Water is Soma and it can balance all Doshas. While it supports Kapha, it also balances and calms down Pitta.  Pitta is the fire element that regulates the body’s temperature. It also governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, and metabolism. Many people experience an increased level of pitta aggravation during summers. Drinking Matka (in India, we lovingly called clay pot, Matka) water can help to regulate the pH levels of your body. Our bodies are naturally acidic, while the clay is alkaline, so when we drink matka (clay pot) water, it helps us maintain a healthy balance between these two extremes.

Natural Cooling Effect

Matka (clay pot) water was prevalent in ancient times because it was the only way people could have cold water before refrigeration came into existence. Matka (clay pots) work on the principle of vaporization as they are porous hence, the pot itself draws moisture from the surrounding air, which absorbs into its walls making them impenetrable to heat. It means that nothing but coolness comes out of this natural urn!

Compatible With Body Temperature

Refrigerated water is way too cold and has a few detrimental effects on the digestive system. It does not seem to go well with our natural body temperature, which is why it may contribute to making it harder for us to digest food that we’ve consumed prior. Whereas, clay pot water has the perfect temperature for those who want something soothing that won’t make them sick in any way.

Works As A Natural Purifier

Clay pots not only function as a water cooler but can also purify the water naturally. It has a porous texture that filters out all pollutants in the water and helps make it safe to drink.

Improves Metabolism

Refrigerated water is generally stored in plastic bottles and can have several adverse effects on your body. The chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) can lead to decreased testosterone levels and can also interfere with your hormonal balance. Clay pots are known for balancing the hormonal system. Not only that, the earth contains many types of vitamins and minerals that improve one’s metabolism.

We swear by clay pot water during summers. Earth/ clay has the best potpourri scent you’ll ever smell! This ancient practice not only promotes good health but also has therapeutic benefits too. So next time you’re thirsty – drink from the clay pot!
