Good Food and Yoga to Balance the Doshas

We all wish to lead a happy and prosperous life and each one of us have a different definition of prosperity or we may use good as a synonym for prosperity. Ironically when we look around most of the things, people and situations seem to be bad and untrustworthy. What has created so much complexities and confusion? It’s our acts owing to our physical and mental vikriti, which means mental  imbalance.

The external environment is beyond our control but to expand our internal locus of control is up to us. Just being health conscious is not enough. We need to understand the nature of our body and what is needed to balance it. Universe and its beings are comprised of 5 elements-Space/Sky, Air, Water, Earth and Fire. All human beings have a combination of these elements in different proportions which we call doshas or tendencies which play a pivotal role in their mental and physical set up and responses:

Vata characterized by wind energy= Ether (Sky/Space) + Air- It controls creativity movement and communication. It governs the muscular movements, tissue movement and cell mobility.

Pitta- characterized by Fire energy= Water + Fire- It controls Digestion and transformation. Promotes intelligence, digestion of food, thoughts and emotions. It regulates metabolic processes.

Kapha- characterized by water energy= Water + Earth- It controls cohesiveness and lubrication. It provides structure to things. Provides moisture and lubrication to bones, cells and tissues. Kapha is also responsible to build immunity and protect the tissues. It also promotes the energies of love and compassion.

Depending upon the dominant combination out of the three in a person, his bodily tendency is said to be categorized under the three doshas.

The imbalance in any of them creates problems both physically and mentally also affecting our behavior and responses.

In order to keep these doshas in proper balance we are advised to perform yoga based on our body tendency and which facilitate in subduing the tendency which is aggravated. Meditation is apt for all three tendencies.

Along with yoga, diet which is satvik food is recommended as it is pure, organic, palpable and is not canned, aerated, fried and oily like rajasic food that aggravates kapha tendencies. Tamasic and Rajasic food can increase feelings of anger, distress, and immorality or in any way can lead the mind towards seven deadly sins and can result in bad responses and experiences in life.

So let us motivate ourselves  with a yoga practice and sumptuous appropriate diet  to balance our tendencies and channelize our energies in creating a sustainable environment for every being because in a healthy body resides a healthy mind.
