Yoga- the union of mind, body, and soul with the infinite. This ancient practice has today become a strong science to heal mankind and is the catalyst in bringing humans closer to nature which they are comprised of.
The ultimate aim of yoga is believed to be spiritual enlightenment. This process involves a set of principles as prescribed by sage Patanjali in the form of eight limbs which serves as a way of life and that complements the natural functioning of our entire system and keeps it in balance. But the contemporary world posed serious challenges before us in the form of lifestyle diseases and chronic problems owing to our stressful lives and callous attitude towards health. Yoga thus emerged as a strong therapeutic science that supports modern medicine and one that paves the way to healthy life.
Even renowned medical practitioners confide in this natural science and how it unfolds the unique self-healing, balancing, and preventive mechanisms of our body that can avert and heal serious health issues. Dr. Vineeta Ketkar’s book, ‘Rope and Belt Therapy for painful Knee Osteoarthritis’ is exemplary work on Yoga as “Therapeutic Science”.
Legendary medical & yoga expert gives you enough reasons, why you should buy this book?
The three streams of the Yoga of the Gita, Knowledge, action, and devotion, come together in Dr. Vineeta Ketkar’s book, ‘Rope and Belt Therapy for painful Knee Osteoarthritis’. Dr. S.V. Karandikar, a medical doctor and a disciple of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyenger devised in the 1990s, the rope and belt therapy for several common musculoskeletal problems of the knees and the feet. Dr. Vineeta Ketkar, also a medical doctor, out of her devotion to Yogaacharya Iyengar and Dr. Karandikar, has continued the practice of this unique therapy. Now her knowledge and encouraging experience with patients has taken the shape of this handy book, which can carry Dr.Karandikar’s innovation to a wider audience of orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, and Yoga teachers, who can add this approach to their work and thereby help many more patients with common ailments such as chronic osteoarthritis of the knees.

I know Dr. Vineeta Ketkar since 1985. She is a dedicated Family Physician. Her passion for Yogic Science & its therapeutic application has greatly widened the spectrum of her clinical practice. I have observed her approach to handle the cases of Osteoarthritis of the knee joint with the help of modified yogic postures, ambulatory belts & Rope & Belt therapy at Yoga Therapy Center. Most of the cases of Grade I & II Osteoarthritis of the knee joint, do find remarkable relief in pain & stiffness. Patients are benefited by this conservative management. She is collecting control data for her research paper on the Role of Rope & Belt Therapy for conservative management in Osteoarthritis of knee joint at my hospital.
This book is a symbol of her dedication to both fields, Modern medicine & Yogic science. She has given full justice to both aspects. The reader will have the luxury of a single book providing the details of anatomy, kinematics & pathophysiology of Osteoarthritis as well as Yogic science & Rope & Belt Therapy. I am sure the medical & yoga professionals will enjoy reading the book & use the principles explained in it.

This book viz “rope and belt therapy for knees and osteoarthritis”, another contribution to utilitarian yog arrives on our consumer counter. Of course the aspect of rope and belt and such props come to alleviate some dimension of human suffering. Thus such innovations are greatly welcomed. All good things should be accepted as good things. But what may be questionable is what name one gives to it. Calling all solutions to human life, even very mundane and materialistic is being called yog. This aspect is worth pondering over. Let us not call so many things in fashion as yog. Earth’s formation was along with that of the sun some 4500 million years ago. A certain phenomenon turned out sun and earth and rest of the solar system. But we can’t call earth, moons and planets as sun. It is not proper to call what comes out of yog and yogic process as yog.
Yog in classical sense is not therapy but yogic processes may have therapeutical values. Guruji B.K.S Iyengar’s association is sought here. He evolved props for a nobler purpose. But those had utility values for needy human beings. These had lot of appeal for consumeristic minds. He often said “Props are for yog and not body”. Anyway, what is helping reduce sufferings should be valued rather than being analyzed critically. Thus, praises for the author for the presentation of book.
