Where Yoga has Gone?

Yoga the ancient art to refine, rejuvenate and illuminate the consciousness within. It is evolving since the times of vedas and upanishads. It was practised by sages and as a result of their austere lives they gave to the world yoga in its numerous avatars.

Renowned sages like Patanjali, T. Krishnamacharya, Swami Sivananda, B.K.S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois, Ramakrishna Paramhamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Paramhamsa Yogananda, Swami Yukteshwar Giri and Sri Aurobindo. They all took yoga from raw to refined forms which is actually practiced and followed all across the world. They are the personalities who experienced the highest levels of enlightenment which leads to infinity and freedom of mind body and soul from the shackles of pleasure and pain and bringing life from shambles to well organized and disciplined state. The wonders of yoga are known to all.

As yoga evolved, the ways and place to perform it also kept on changing. It’s always good to change for the better. But today the kind of transformation is taking place as far as yoga is concerned is something unknown and unreliable in disguise. Some things last as long as their true essence and originality is intact. For instance not all old songs are popular when remixed. Yoga is actually about right living and practice.

Yoga is not just confined to tough asanas or stretching it involves the eight limbs, right breathing and most importantly right attitude and outlook towards our internal and external environment in which we live, involve and evolve each day. Modern day yoga seems to be more confined to asanas. It is good to have a yoga vacation, practice it with a companion or use modern and organic yoga accessories to assist better focus and balance. In short yoga is evolving as long as it is not losing its true spirit when passed on to someone else. But versions like pool yoga, beer yoga, goat yoga doesn’t seem to adhere to pratyaksha pramana it might be based on anumana that such types of yoga are at par with the traditional yoga practices. Moreover everything requires proper time, place and ambience in order to reap its benefits. Yoga isn’t a fad but a profound view of inner self.

Whatever we gain in terms of knowledge should be supported by authentic proof and logic. We already have our ancient scriptures and living legends of yoga from cross cultural backgrounds who have experienced it and attained consciousness and contentment. Yoga is not about sitting in tough postures or living an austere life on mountains and forests. Yoga today is all about finding your true self which is lost in noise and disturbances of life to vanquish the negativity and embrace life in full spirit and respect all forms of beings.

Let’s preserve this legacy in its original form as very few things are existing in this world which are not overshadowed by the outward illusions.
