It asks them to understand ageing, offer suitable support, communicate clearly and recognise when a concern needs a health professional. It is specialised teaching education, not a licence to diagnose illness or replace medical care.

Imagine two people, both 72, arriving for a yoga class. This is a hypothetical scene, not a student testimonial. One enjoys walking and wants a practice that feels less hurried. The other is uneasy about getting down to the floor and asks whether a chair is allowed.

Their birthdays tell the teacher almost nothing about how to begin. Their answers do.

A class labelled “senior yoga” can still overlook the people in it. Slow music and a shorter sequence do not, by themselves, make teaching suitable. The deeper change is in the teacher’s attention: from completing a planned sequence to understanding what participation means for each person.

That is the case for specialised training in geriatric care. The aim is not to turn older adults into a separate category of fragile bodies. It is to stop treating age as a complete description of a person.

What changes when we teach older adults?

The first question need not be “Which asana can this person do?” It can be “What would they like to feel more able to do?”

Someone may want to move with more confidence. Someone else may value a regular hour of practice without pressure to perform. These are different intentions, even when the students sit beside each other.

Physical needs matter too. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health advises older adults and people with health conditions to discuss their individual needs with their healthcare provider and yoga instructor. It names balance issues, knee or hip injuries, lumbar spine disease, severe high blood pressure and glaucoma among conditions that may require changes to practice.

For a teacher, that guidance means gathering relevant information without attempting a diagnosis. It means listening to what a student has been told by their clinician, asking about concerns and being willing to change the class plan. Knowing a posture’s usual instructions is different from knowing whether those instructions fit the person in front of you.

A chair is an option, not an identity

Chair yoga can make practice more accessible for people with limited mobility; NCCIH describes it as a gentler option for such seniors. [2] But a chair should not become an assumption attached to every older person.

In our hypothetical class, the student who does not want to get onto the floor might welcome a seated option. The walker might prefer a different arrangement. Neither choice makes someone a better student.

The teaching question is not whether a supported version looks like the familiar pose. It is whether the chosen practice suits the student’s needs and agreed purpose. A teacher needs alternatives, but also the judgment to avoid offering an alternative as a universal prescription.

Permission matters here. Ask before touching or adjusting someone. Explain an option without announcing a person’s limitation to the room. Make it ordinary to pause or decline. These are teaching principles, not treatment claims, and they can shape whether a student feels included or managed.

What the research supports, and what it does not

There are reasons to take yoga for older adults seriously. There are also reasons to speak about its benefits carefully.

A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials found improvements in balance, lower-body flexibility and lower-limb strength when yoga was compared with inactive controls. Against other active interventions, the pattern was narrower: the review did not find a statistically significant advantage for balance.

That distinction matters. “Better than doing little or nothing” is not the same claim as “better than another suitable exercise programme.”

Nor is improving a balance measure the same as preventing falls. In the 2025 SAGE trial, 700 independently living Australian adults aged 60 or older were assigned to an Iyengar yoga-based exercise programme or seated relaxation yoga. The exercise group had a higher rate of falls. The authors concluded that this particular programme should not be recommended for fall prevention in its current form. Most classes were delivered online.

This does not settle the value of every yoga style or class. It does rule out an easy promise: that yoga, simply because it includes balance work, can be marketed as a proven way to prevent falls.

A responsible teacher can welcome promising findings without turning them into a guarantee. If fall prevention is a student’s central need, that is a reason to involve an appropriate health professional and discuss evidence-based options, not to make a promise from a course certificate.

What to look for in geriatric yoga teacher training

A useful training should help teachers think through decisions, rather than collect a longer list of postures.

Look for study of ageing physiology alongside psychology and communication. Ask how adaptations are taught, what opportunities there are to discuss cases, and how the course explains the boundary between teaching yoga and treating a medical condition.

A practical test is to return to the two students in the opening scene. Does the training help you ask better questions? Can you explain your choice of practice, offer an appropriate alternative and recognise when you do not have enough information to proceed?

Online learning adds another question: how will you learn to observe and respond when a camera gives you only a partial view? Convenience does not remove the need for supervision and feedback.

No training removes uncertainty. Good training should make teachers more willing to notice it.

Where hellomyyoga’s Geriatric Care TTC fits

hellomyyoga’s published 80-hour Specialized Yoga Teacher Training for Geriatric Care brings together ageing physiology, ageing psychology and mental health, and nutrition with Ayurveda. Its listed mentors are Dr. Vineeta Ketkar, Dr. N. Ganesh Rao and Dr. Pankaj Chansarkar. The format combines 39 hours of recorded study with 41 hours of live Zoom sessions.

The course FAQ specifies certified yoga teacher training from a recognised institute, university or centre, plus at least two years of teaching experience. Prospective participants should confirm their eligibility and the current batch details directly with the course team before enrolling.

Teachers considering this next step can read the course outline and ask how its teaching approach fits their students and experience.

The larger purpose remains simple: an older adult should not have to fit a teacher’s idea of ageing before they can belong in a yoga class. Specialised training is worthwhile when it helps the teacher see the person more clearly.

Sources:

NCCIH: Yoga, effectiveness and safety. Individual needs, modifications and the role of healthcare advice.
NCCIH: Yoga for Health, What the Science Says.
