Her day started with a phone in one hand and a kettle in the other. By noon her shoulders were near her ears. By night she lay awake, tired and wired at once.

We did not ask her to quiet the mind. We asked her to breathe out for a little longer than she breathed in, for a few minutes. After a week she said something small: “I noticed when it started.” That one noticing is where the real practice begins.

There is a body-level reason it works. It lives in a part of you that you never choose to run: the autonomic nervous system.

What is the autonomic nervous system?

Your nervous system has a part you steer on purpose, like lifting an arm, and a part that runs on its own. The second part is the autonomic nervous system. It manages heart rate, digestion, breathing rhythm, sweating and much more, all without asking you.

It has two main branches. The sympathetic branch prepares you to act. Heart rate rises, breathing quickens, digestion slows. The parasympathetic branch supports rest and repair. Heart rate settles, digestion works, the body lets go. The vagus nerve is a major part of this second branch.

Both are needed. You want the sympathetic branch when a car swerves toward you. The trouble starts when the day gives it no off switch: inbox, news, deadlines, a late dinner, a screen at midnight. The body keeps treating ordinary pressure as an emergency.

What yoga texts noticed long before the textbooks

The old texts did not use these words, yet they describe the same pattern. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika says that when the breath moves, the mind moves, and when the breath is still, the mind is still (chale vate chalam chittam, 2.2). Notice how it connects the two. Breath is the one automatic function you can also control. That makes it a doorway into the part of you that usually runs unseen.

The Bhagavad Gita speaks of a yoga that is for the one who is moderate in food and recreation, in effort and in sleep (6.17). That reads today like a plain description of balance between activity and rest. And in 2.48 Krishna says evenness of mind is itself called yoga (samatvam yoga uchyate). Evenness is not the absence of life. It is the ability to return.

Patanjali offers the posture advice in the Yoga Sutras: sthira sukham asanam, a posture should be steady and comfortable (2.46), held with effortlessness (2.47). A pose that you grip and fight is, in nervous system terms, more of the same alarm.

How practice speaks to the nervous system

Here are the simple levers, and what they seem to do. Research in this area is still growing, and results vary from person to person, so treat these as reasons to explore gently, not promises.

Slow, longer exhales. A longer out-breath is associated with a calmer heart rate and a feeling of settling. Try breathing in for a count of four and out for six, for three to five minutes.

Steady, unforced postures. Holding a pose with attention, and without strain, gives you practice at staying present while the body feels sensation. That is the same skill you need when a hard conversation arrives.

Gentle movement linked with breath. Moving slowly with the breath gives the mind one clear job, and it often loosens the loop of worry.

Rest that is real. A few minutes of lying down at the end of practice is not a bonus. It is where the body gets to practise being at ease.

Humming or chanting. The long, steady sound lengthens the exhale naturally. Many people find it quietly settling.

A five-minute reset you can do today

Sit or lie down. Let the body be supported.

Place one hand on the belly. Notice the breath without changing it for five breaths.

Breathe in through the nose for four counts. Breathe out slowly for six.

Continue for three minutes. If you feel dizzy or uneasy, return to normal breathing.

Before you open your eyes, notice one thing: what is different, even slightly?

Do this at the same time each day, such as before the first cup of tea or before sleep. A small practice done daily teaches the body more than a long practice done once a month.

Learn the science and the practice together

Most of us practise yoga without ever being told what is happening inside. When you understand the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, practice stops being a routine and becomes a conversation with your own body.

That is why hellomyyoga has a self-study program on the Autonomic Nervous System, taught by Dr Vineeta Ketkar. It is for students and teachers who want to learn how this system is built and how yogic practices relate to it, at their own pace, with no live-class timetable to follow. https://courses.hellomyyoga.com/course/AnatomyPhysiologyofAutonomicNervousSystemfo-107562

A note on care

Yoga can support well-being, but it is not a replacement for medical care. If you have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, are pregnant, or are managing any health issue, speak to your doctor and a qualified teacher before changing your breathing practices.

The takeaway

You do not need a quiet mind to begin. You need a slightly longer exhale, a posture you can stay in without a fight, and the willingness to notice. The nervous system does the rest of its work in its own time.

hellomyyoga has taught 300+ yoga programs to 21,000+ students from 70 countries since 2021. If you want to start with the body and its calm, begin with your next breath.

A student once told me she could not meditate. “My mind will not sit down,” she said.
