You left the village. You moved to the city. A bigger city meant a bigger life – more opportunity, more convenience, more of everything. Our parents and grandparents measured progress in kilometres travelled towards the nearest metro.

Today, the traffic is reversing. Professionals are packing up in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi and moving to Bhopal, Coimbatore and Dehradun. Newspapers in India are calling it “the great reverse migration”. In Australia, Sydney and Melbourne are losing residents to small regional towns at levels last seen during the pandemic. The same people who once craved the city are now running from it – towards cleaner air, slower mornings, smaller towns, and some version of peace.

But here is the uncomfortable truth: even when we escape the concrete, the worry travels with us.

The Worry That Follows Us

Open any news app and it finds you. Record-breaking heatwaves. Floods in one state, drought in another. A report that the last decade was the hottest ever recorded. Slowly, without anyone naming it, a low hum of dread about the planet has become part of modern life.

Psychologists have named it. In 2017, the American Psychological Association described “eco-anxiety” as “a chronic fear of environmental doom.” It is not a mental illness or a diagnosis. It is, in many ways, a sane response to an unstable world – a sign that we care. But when care turns into helplessness, sleeplessness and a constant background worry, it begins to cost us our health.

This is where an ancient science has something surprisingly practical to offer.

What Research Says About Yoga, Mindfulness and Nature

The science here is young but encouraging.

A 2024 study of Australian adults, published in the journal Mindfulness, found that certain aspects of mindfulness – acting with awareness, and accepting experiences without judging them – were linked with lower climate anxiety. A 2026 study from Hungary, published in European Psychiatry, went deeper: people who were more aware and less judgmental of their own experience reported significantly lower eco-anxiety, while women on average reported higher eco-anxiety than men.

Nature itself seems to be part of the medicine. A systematic review and meta-analysis on shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing, found that time spent mindfully in forests measurably lowers cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone. Another systematic review covering nature-exposure therapies found meaningful reductions in stress, depression and anxiety.

Interestingly, the Hungarian study also found a twist: people who feel deeply connected to nature can feel the planet’s pain more sharply. Loving the earth makes its suffering personal. Which raises the real question – how do we stay connected and caring without being crushed? Research alone does not answer that. Philosophy does.

Samatvam: The Gita’s Answer to Overwhelm

Five thousand years ago, on a battlefield, Arjuna experienced what we might today call acute anxiety. He saw the scale of what was wrong, and he wanted to put down his bow and walk away.

Krishna’s counsel to him contains one of the most quoted lines of the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 2, Verse 48):

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय।
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते॥

yogasthah kuru karmani sangam tyaktva dhananjaya
siddhy-asiddhyoh samo bhutva samatvam yoga uchyate

“Established in yoga, perform your actions, letting go of attachment, O Arjuna. Remaining even-minded in success and failure – this evenness of mind is called yoga.”

Samatvam – equanimity. Notice what Krishna does not say. He does not say the situation is fine. He does not tell Arjuna to stop caring. He tells him to act, fully and sincerely, while releasing his grip on the outcome.

Much of eco-anxiety is the pain of trying to control something far bigger than one person. Samatvam is the antidote: plant the tree, change what you can, do your dharma towards the earth – and let the steadiness of your mind be independent of whether the world’s graph turns up or down this year. Caring without collapsing. This is not indifference. It is the deepest form of engagement, because a steady mind can act for decades while an anxious one burns out in months.

The Real Brahmacharya: Restraint in an Age of Consumption

But equanimity alone is not enough, and here we must be honest with ourselves.

The climate crisis is, at its root, a crisis of consumption. More things, more packaging, more upgrades, more deliveries – an economy built on convincing us that we are one purchase away from contentment. We cannot meditate in the morning and over-consume all day, and expect peace.

The Yoga tradition has a word for this missing discipline: brahmacharya. It is the fourth of the five yamas in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and it is usually translated narrowly as celibacy. But teachers of the tradition have long understood it far more broadly – as “walking in alignment with the highest”, as the wise and moderate use of all our energy and senses. The Himalayan Institute describes it as the middle path of moderation: neither overindulgence nor repression, but freedom from the cravings that run us.

Read this way, brahmacharya is exactly the practice our climate-worried generation needs:

Buying less, and buying with awareness.

Using what we already have, fully, before seeking more.

Consuming food, media and energy in measures that leave us – and the planet – with something in reserve.

Every tradition of yoga agrees on this much: a mind trained in restraint is a calmer mind. And a society trained in restraint is a quieter threat to the earth. The real brahmacharya of our time is not withdrawal from life. It is moderation in how we take from the world.

A Simple Way to Begin

Coping with climate worry does not require grand gestures. It asks for small, steady practices:

Time in nature, without the phone. Twenty minutes under trees is not a luxury; research suggests it is a physiological reset.

Breath before news. A few rounds of slow, deep breathing or pranayama before opening the headlines changes what the headlines do to you.

One act of care a day. Water a plant, refuse one plastic bag, cook instead of ordering in. Action is the oldest cure for helplessness.

Study that steadies. Texts like the Bhagavad Gita were composed for moments when the world felt like it was ending. They still work.

Learning Yoga Beyond the Mat

At hellomyyoga, this is the heart of what our programs try to offer – not just asana technique, but the philosophical depth that makes yoga a way of meeting the world. Through programs on the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras, pranayama and mindful living, taught by experienced teachers and scholars, students learn to build exactly the two muscles this anxious age demands: samatvam, a mind that stays even, and brahmacharya, a life lived in conscious measure. The website hellomyyoga.com carries programs across spiritual learning, teacher training and self-paced study for those who want to go deeper.

The people leaving the cities are not wrong to seek the mountains and the smaller towns. But the peace they are looking for is not a pin on a map. It is a state of mind the rishis mapped long ago – and it is available right where you are.

Sources

Research

Mindfulness Facets, Nature Relatedness, and Eco Anxiety: Evidence from a Hungarian Adult Sample – European Psychiatry

Is Mindfulness a Double-Edged Sword?
