I want to know Yoga & psychotropic substances - is it valid or invalid? however, in our religious texts lord Shiva is witnessed taking it and if yoga is following his path so does it validate to have psychotropic substances? Whenever I am hiking up in the mountains I see so many yoga practitioners consuming it but I want to understand that is it right or wrong? as it confuses me.

Hi,

If we look to the Yoga sutras for guidance, the sutra that i am reminded of is the first sutra of the fourth chapter on liberation - Kaivalaya Pada.

It says there that powers can be attained either by janma or birth, aushadi or herbs, mantras, tapas, or through samadhi.

The purpose of yoga is not to attain powers but to transcend suffering and be liberated and the path is through meditation.

Yoga teaches us that as is the macrocosm so is the microcosm. Everything outside has its essence deep within us as well. Yoga goes beyond dualities. Beyond valid and invalid, right and wrong, pain and pleasure etc.

We can look for stimulation from the outside to achieve our goal or we can look within. The choice is ours.

Use of intoxicants and substances may cause dependency and can adversely affect one if not administered with care and medical supervision.

Thanks Harshvardhan for your answer. Yes, indeed the choice is ours but when anyone indulge in it they make an excuse to do it again and again. We know yoga is a big industry and many things comes as a fashion, we hope use of these substances doesn't come the same way.

Best Wishes - Shrey

Thank you Shrey. I understand your perspective. Yes, the mind makes excuses and finds reasons to justify the repeated use of it. The purpose of yoga is to overcome these tendencies by creating new impressions. The industry is growing bigger too and is prone to it. Especially with the increased medical use of them in therapeutic settings, yogic practices supplement the processes. Lets hope it doesnt become a fashion and if in use, is used consciously.

Best wishes

Harsh
