Anxiety, outbursts of anger, and depression seem to be a new pandemic these days. These emotions can usually be traced back to how we are thrown off balance during difficult periods of our lives.
Life will always throw you curveballs that test your ability to be patient. We sometimes let ourselves become attached – even reliant – on what the end result will be. When things don’t go according to plan, we feel disappointed. But when one learns detachment, they can be content with who they are regardless of outcomes.
Letting Go of Things as per Bhagavad Gita
Bhagavad Gita stresses over and over again the need for detachment from material possessions or worldly affairs. Non-attachment, it states, is how one can reach enlightenment. One of its many benefits – even if it may be difficult to come by – is that non-attachment brings peace to your soul. It stands to reason that the constant practice of this state will result in spiritual emancipation.

What Detachment Truly Means
What is it to detach oneself from the world? To withdraw from the company of others, or disappear and leave everyone behind? What does disengagement look like physically, if at all? Isn’t detachment just a fancy way to say you don’t want anything anymore?
There needs to be more clarity and understanding about what true detachment means. Detachment is the ability to maintain calm in the best and direst situation.
A verse from geeta that explain about how to let go things in life:
tasmād asaktaḥ satataḿ
kāryaḿ karma samācara
asakto hy ācaran karma
param āpnoti pūruṣaḥ
Detachment is an attitude where we live without feeling that anything belongs to us and work without feeling that we are the cause. Sri Krishna declares that the influence of material modes and false ego causes actions. Because one falsely identifies themselves as being responsible for all deeds, one becomes attached to them; attachments inevitably cause delusions that prevent rational thinking and lead to destructive behaviors.
With this sense of detachment, the man stays unaffected by anything. No matter what happens in life – good or bad. He does his best without fretting about either successes or failures. A detached person can accept outcomes with grace and thankfulness. Remaining calm even when under extreme pressure. Therefore, gaining freedom from being enslaved to the fruits of his actions.

How to Let Go of Things
Detachment is the art of letting go. It is about seeing people, things, and events as they truly are and dealing with them accordingly without getting attached to any of them. The one who has perfected this art stops taking things personally. He lets go of painful memories, harmful thoughts, insatiable desires, and detrimental habits. Thus, he ceases to dwell in the past and gives up anxieties about the future. He becomes free from emotional baggage and overcomes suffering.
