From there, the journey is yours to discover.

The Transformational Stages of Yoga

Discovering the various stages of transformation that a Yogi goes through can be an enlightening experience. As they progress through their spiritual journey, Yogis undergo a profound metamorphosis that can be marked by several distinct stages. From initially discovering inner peace to achieving profound moments of clarity and self-realization, each stage is a milestone in Yogi’s journey. By understanding and embracing these stages, you too can begin to unlock your true potential and find deeper fulfillment in your life. The Dattātreyayogaśāstra also outlines four stages of practice: inception (ārambha), action (ghaṭa), accumulation (paricaya), and completion(niṣpatti). These stages, first introduced in the Amṛtasiddhi, have stood the test of time. Let’s take a closer look at how this ancient knowledge continues to hold relevance in modern times.

1. Inception (ārambha):

When we’re not feeling our best, the idea or desire to heal ourselves begins to form. It’s here where the journey toward healing can truly begin. Many of us turn to yoga when we are feeling physically or emotionally unwell, seeking a path to wellness and inner peace. This desire to heal ourselves is a natural part of being human, and yoga offers a holistic approach to healing.

2. Action (ghaṭa)

As you begin your yoga practice, you’re embarking on a journey of new self-discovery. With every session, you can let go of old habits and negative thoughts that once held you back. Although initially, the separation from your old self is only temporary – just an hour or so at a time – the benefits are long-lasting. As you submit to the process, you’re able to release any distracting personal issues, concerns, or worries, and calm your monkey mind allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the present moment.

3. Accumulation (paricaya)

As yogis progress, they focus on postures, breath, and meditation, allowing the essence of yoga to become a part of them. They experience moments of release and surrender, aware of the sacred space they’re in, where they may encounter minor miracles or even a connection with a higher power. However, they cannot remain in this state forever and must return to their daily lives, but with a renewed mindset and approach. In a bustling world filled with chaos, they can see significant improvements in emotions, compassion, love, empathy, and others that are essential for a balanced approach toward life. They’ll carry this newfound awareness and begin to see things in a new light.

4. Completion(niṣpatti)

Yogis at this stage practice yoga to maintain a continuous state of peace day and night. And while they do gain physical benefits from yoga, their practice is focused purely on the joy it brings them. For these advanced practitioners, yoga becomes a way of life – their movements become fluid and meditative, seamlessly blending with daily activities. Rather than seeking personal gain, the yogis practice as a devotional act, embracing emptiness, stillness, and silence.

Yoga is a journey unique to every individual, with each stage presenting its own set of challenges. For some, understanding or connecting with others in the Action stage may prove difficult, while others may find love and ease in the Accumulation Stage. Life is an intricate tapestry of lessons, requiring each soul to learn and grow. As we progress through each stage, new layers of understanding are uncovered, revealing deeper insights and wisdom.
