This modern way of living leads to mental afflictions that ancient yoga philosophy calls the five kleshas:

  • Avidya, or ignorance, manifests as living in a world flooded with information yet lacking real wisdom;
  • Asmita, or egoism, shows up as an identity crisis where we over-identify with our roles, labels, and digital personas;
  • Raga, or attachment, drives our endless scrolling, shopping, and constant seeking of external validation;
  • Dvesha, or aversion, fuels our tendency to avoid discomfort, block differing views, and seek only curated comfort; and
  • Abhinivesha, or clinging to life, emerges as a deep fear of aging, illness, change, and uncertainty that makes us obsess over control and security.
