Fasting in Sanskrit is called Upavaasa. Upa means “near” + vaasa means “to stay.” Therefore, Upavaasa means attainment of close mental proximity with the Lord. Fasting is an ancient practice that is recommended as an act of Tapasya, or self-restraint. Through fasting, we can control our senses which aid in making ourselves spiritually conscious. It teaches us to stop being greedy and self-satisfied.

If our senses are out of control and unregulated, we will never be able to reach the sattva-guna or mode of goodness needed for spiritual progression.
