Pranayama: The Fourth Anga
Prāṇāyāma is a classical yoga practice. Its references are found in scriptural texts like the Bhagavad-Gītā and the Upaniṣads. It is the 4th aṅga in Patañjalis Aṣṭāṅga Yoga and prepares one for the higher stages of yoga practice. In Haṭha Yoga texts, we find detailed descriptions of various kinds of Kumbhaka and instructions on their practice. Today, the practice is equated primarily with breathing techniques, however, it is more than this. Uncover some of the deeper dimensions of the practice of prāṇāyāma from the scriptures and learn about its deeper embedded cultural values for enhancing one's quality of life.

According to the Yoga Sūtra, Prāṇāyāma prepares the mind for dhāraṇā. We find the fundamentals of the practice laid down by Patañjali. Later Haṭha texts provide specific instructions for prāṇāyāma practice, such as Nāḍī Śuddhi, Ujjāyī, etc as well as prescribe auspicious times for practice, and list characteristic signs of progress.
With this program, you will gain a deeper understanding of the breath, prāṇa, and its connection with the mind. Its value in yoga sādhanā as an ideal preparatory practice for the transcendental states of yoga as well as a key tool for integration of the personality, a way to enhance one's life path.
