The Vedantic View of Death in Light of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother
What is death? What is it that escapes at the time of death? Death is a reality that all of us have to face one day but remains a mystery to us. Surprisingly, we often find ourselves unprepared and unwilling to come to terms with its inevitability. Why does this resistance to accept the inevitable persist? Our journey towards embracing the concept of death requires introspection and a shift in perspective, which can come only from a deeper understanding of our existence. Engage with Dr. Ramesh Bijlani as he unveils the concept of death from the Vedantic point of view.

Throughout human history, several attempts – religious and spiritual on one hand, and rational and scientific on the other – have been made to understand the phenomenon of death. Most people are unaware of their existence before birth and their life after death. Closely related to this ignorance is the viewpoint that life has no inherent purpose; birth and death are merely the starting and ending points of an existence devoid of meaning. However, if this were true, we would be left wondering about the purpose of the vast universal mechanism, and why we undergo experiences, acquire knowledge, and strive for growth. These questions challenge us to consider how and why we are intricately connected to this wondrous creation. Vedanta offers a unique understanding of life and death by looking at an individual’s life on earth as a small part of the journey of the soul, which continues life after life. Further, terrestrial existence has a purpose, which is evolution of consciousness.
