The attitude towards things and people outside is called Yama and how we relate to ourselves inwardly is called Niyama." They form the roots of the tree of yoga, moral and ethical aspects that one should integrate. They are the essential foundation of our spiritual growth, which is why Patañjali dedicates about 15 sutras to them. Regular observance of the Yamas and Niyamas can help purify the mind and take us forward in our spiritual journey.
