Integrating this “off the mat" practice into our daily lives, by observing the five Yamas & Niyamas, is a sure way to transform our outlook and our yoga practice. With these elements, our Yoga will take on a deeper meaning, while embodying the ancient wisdom that this practice has to offer.
Yoga can bring us so much more than just a toned body; it can provide us with an enhanced outlook on the world. Although many of us may choose to practice yoga for the physical benefits, it is the mindfulness and attitude it inspires within us that make our stay. Focusing on our breath and being aware and mindful of our bodies can help to calm our minds and enable a greater sense of harmony in our lives beyond the yoga studio. The practice of yoga is not just about the time you're on your mat, but about bringing the calmness and harmony that comes from the practice into your daily routine.
Yama and Niyama are based on five ethical principles each, which relate to the relationship between the individual and the outside world as well as personal morality and discipline.
It is noteworthy that the Yamas and Niyamas have many similarities to the Ten Commandments and the Ten Virtues of Buddhism, showcasing that across many traditions, we all have shared values, goals, and objectives.
