About Yoga

Yoga is a spiritual discipline. It is based on a highly subtle science focusing on bringing harmony between body and mind. Further, it is an art and science for healthy living. Yoga is the Sanskrit word yuj, meaning 'to yoke, ' which means to draw together, to bind together, or to unite. It aims to yoke or create a union of the mind, body, soul, and universal consciousness. This process of uniting the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of ourselves allows yogis to experience deep states of freedom, peace, and self-realization.

According to the Yogic scriptures, Yoga unionizes individual consciousness with universal consciousness. Modern scientists say everything in the universe manifests the same quantum firmament. A person experiencing this oneness of existence is seemingly 'in Yoga' and is termed' a Yogi,' one who has attained a state of freedom referred to as moksha, mukti, nirvana, or kaivalya.

Also, Yoga refers to an inner science comprising various techniques through which human beings achieve a union between the body and mind to attain self-realization. Yoga practice (sadhana) overcomes all kinds of suffering, leading to freedom in every phase of life and holistic health, happiness, and harmony.

Six Branches of Yoga

The overall philosophy of yoga is about connecting the mind, body, and spirit. There are 6 branches of Yoga, each representing a different focus and set of characteristics.

The 6 branches are:

1. Hatha Yoga

This is the physical and mental branch involving asana and pranayama practice that uses the body as a vehicle for self-transformation. Hatha yoga prepares the body and mind for Raja yoga.

2. Raja Yoga

Known as the royal path of yoga, it is based on the eight-limbed path that focuses on meditation and contemplation to fully realize the self. The purpose of Raja yoga is to calm the fluctuations of the mind. It is sometimes viewed as an umbrella over Hatha yoga as it encompasses the goals of Hatha yoga.

3. Karma Yoga

Karma yoga is the branch of selfless action. Karma refers to the effects of one’s past actions on future circumstances. The more we engage in selfless service, the better our karma and, thus, the better our future circumstances.

4. Bhakti Yoga

Bhakti yoga is a branch of devotion to God or a higher power that emphasizes devotional love for and surrender to God. By seeing the Divine everywhere and in everyone, Bhakti yoga cultivates tolerance, acceptance, and love for all beings. It also involves a lot of chanting and kirtan that evokes feelings of love, connection, and bliss.

5. Jnana Yoga

The branch of wisdom, knowledge, introspection, and contemplation, Jnana yoga involves the disciplined study of scriptures and consistent inquiry into the nature of self. Often called the yoga of the mind, it is well suited for the more intellectually inclined. The study of classical texts, such as the Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata, Ramayana, the Vedas, and the Upanishads, form the basis of Jnana Yoga.

6. Tantra Yoga

The ritual branch and a combination of practices and ideas, Tantra yoga sees the universe as the physical manifestation of pure consciousness that connects us all. Tantra Yoga recognizes the subtle energies behind all that is physical and mental and creates rituals to honor these aspects of life.

Types of Yoga

Modern yoga focuses on strength, exercise, breathing, and agility. It helps boost physical and mental well-being. There are multiple styles of yoga. An individual should choose a style based on their goals and fitness level.

Types and styles of yoga are:

Ashtanga Yoga

This practice uses ancient yoga teachings. Ashtanga yoga applies the same poses and sequences, swiftly linking every movement to breath.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram, or hot yoga, is practiced in artificially heated rooms at nearly 105°F and 40% humidity. It has 26 poses and a sequence of 2 breathing exercises.

Hatha Yoga

This is a generic term for any yoga type that teaches physical poses. Hatha yoga usually serves as a gentle introduction to the basic poses of yoga.

Iyengar Yoga

This yoga practice focuses on finding the correct alignment in each pose, using props such as blankets, straps, blocks, chairs, and bolsters.

Kripalu Yoga

This type of yoga teaches practitioners to know, accept, and learn from the body. Kripalu yoga usually starts with breathing exercises, gentle stretches, individual poses, and final relaxation.

Kundalini Yoga

This is a system of meditation that aims to release pent-up energy. Kundalini yoga begins with chanting and ends with singing. In between, it features pranayama, asana, and meditation that create a specific outcome.

Power Yoga

In the late 1980s, yoga practitioners developed this active and athletic yoga type based on the traditional Ashtanga system.

Sivananda

This system uses a 5-point philosophy as its foundation. This philosophy maintains that proper diet, breathing, relaxation, exercise, and positive thinking work together for a healthy yogic lifestyle. Those practicing Sivananda use 12 basic asanas, which they precede with Suryanamaskar and follow with Savasana.

Vini Yoga

Viniyoga focuses on form over breath and adaptation, function, repetition and holding, and the art and science of sequencing.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga focuses on holding passive poses for a long time. This yoga style targets deep tissues, joints, bones, ligaments, and fascia.

Prenatal Yoga

Prenatal yoga consists of poses created by practitioners with pregnant women in mind. This yoga style helps women regain shape after giving birth and supports health at the time of pregnancy.

Restorative Yoga

In this relaxing yoga method, a person spends time in four or five simple poses. The poses are performed using props such as bolsters and blankets to sink into deep relaxation without exerting effort when holding them.

Importance of Yoga

Yoga is not a religion but a way of living that points towards a healthy mind and body. Humans are mental, physical, and spiritual beings, and yoga promotes a balanced development of these three.

Yoga refreshes the body with cosmic energy and facilitates the following:

  • Promotes self-healing

  • Enhances personal power

  • Attainment of perfect equilibrium and harmony

  • Increases self-awareness

  • Clears negative blocks from the mind and toxins from the body

  • Decreases tension and stress in the physical body by activating the parasympathetic nervous system

  • Helps with attention, focus, and concentration, which is especially important for children

The learner feels rejuvenated and energized. Thus, yoga bestows every aspirant the power to control body and mind.

Physical & Mental Health Benefits of Yoga

Yoga offers several benefits for physical and mental health, development, and healing. It works wonders in reducing joint and muscle or back pain. It helps reduce blood pressure levels and improves brain function, heart and lung capacity, muscle strength, balance and flexibility, and much more.

1. Physical Health Benefits of Yoga

The physical health benefits offered by a constant and consistent yoga practice are better known by people. The most common of these are:

Improved Flexibility and Balance

Through the practice of yoga asanas and postures, the body moves in different directions, which helps improve its flexibility. The yoga asanas are also advantageous in balancing weight, correcting posture, and increasing focus.

Strengthens the Muscles

The yoga asanas help build core and muscle strength. Regular practice increases endurance and upper body and muscle strength.

Better Functioning of the Heart and Lungs

A notable health benefit of yoga is that it improves heart health and oxygenation and reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Regular yoga asanas and pranayamas reduce heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and BMI.

Through pranayama, breathing becomes controlled and improves lung functioning by increasing its total capacity.

Boosts Blood Circulation

Yoga asanas and pranayama improve the body's oxygen supply and nutrients and enhance blood circulation. This improved blood flow improves the physical health of our organs, and our skin begins to glow.

Improved Posture

Yoga asanas make one more aware of one's body and self. This awareness leads to a greater understanding of posture—how one sits, stands, and walks. Yoga asanas help with balance and control. They also make one look confident and healthy.

Increased Immunity

Yoga helps build immunity and boosts every cell in the body. As a result, the body's strength increases, it becomes healthy, and diseases are kept at bay. This is a significant physical health benefit obtained through a consistent Yoga practice.

2. Mental Health Benefits of Yoga

Reduces Stress

Stress is one of the major causes of many physical and mental health issues. With yoga practice, the stress hormone cortisol decreases, and the happy hormone serotonin increases. Yoga stimulates relaxation and calmness of stressed nerves. Yoga asanas, pranayama, and meditation help shift the focus from negative thoughts to the present moment. They also reduce depressive symptoms and anxiety.

Improved Sleep Quality

Yoga helps release melatonin, a hormone that helps one fall asleep and get good-quality sleep. Through yoga asanas and pranayama, the mind calms down and reaches a state of relaxation, ultimately preparing the mind and body for sleep.

Increased Focus and Awareness

Focus and concentration are two aspects that people struggle to maintain, whether at work or home. With the constant chatter of the mind, attention and focus are constantly distracted. Thoughts are always racing in the mind, concentration is divided, and stability is hard to achieve.  With yoga asanas, pranayama, and dhyana, one learns to develop a one-pointed focus and be mindful of their thoughts, words, and actions. When one develops awareness, one is alert and present in the now, boosting focus and enhancing productivity.

Enhances Self-Acceptance and Self-Love

In the digital world, everyone seeks validation from the outside world through likes, comments, and praises. The opinion of other people has a significant impact on our perception of ourselves. Yoga teaches us to love, accept, and respect ourselves. Through yoga asanas practice, one learns to develop awareness about one's strengths and weaknesses. It makes one more confident about oneself and increases self-esteem.

Boosts Energy Levels & Reduces Lethargy

After practicing yoga asanas, one doesn’t feel tired. One feels charged and energetic. Yoga makes one more active and reduces laziness.

Anger Management and Increased Calmness

One of the most important benefits of Yoga is that it helps manage anger and makes one calmer and more relaxed. Yoga broadens the mindset, opens blockages, and makes one more empathetic and understanding of others' emotions. This helps raise awareness, reduce anger, and adopt a calm and composed approach towards a particular situation.
